We would like to draw your attention to a relevant post-graduate course offered at the University of East London, UK:
The recently developed international social work programme at postgraduate level at UEL has built on the considerable experience gained in European and international networks; in operating the undergraduate 'top-up degree'; and in collaborative work with established masters courses in allied subjects. Development work has benefited from European Union funding to maintain a SOCRATES network focused on curriculum development and UEL has links with Fachhochschule Koblenz, Germany, Bundesakademie Vienna, Austria, and TEI Athens, Greece, as well as Fachochschule Bern, Switzerland. However, the programme is also rooted in the multicultural mileau of East London and recognises the interconnections between European countries and other parts of the world. A major theme of both courses therefore is the extent to which globalisation affects national welfare arrangements and consequently the roles and tasks of social professionals.
The international social work programme is aimed at people who have completed courses, normally at undergraduate level, equipping them to work as social or community workers, in their own countries. Study can be undertaken on a part-time or full time basis, and includes a two semester teaching period followed by a 3 month period of independent project work leading to a dissertation, if taken full time. The taught part of the course extends over 4 semesters for part-timers with additional block or part-time project work at the end. (Additional information about application and selection procedure is appended).
A key feature of both courses is the period spent abroad. This may be either for the taught part of the course (if the student is from outside the UK) or during the project period for British students. The location and focus of project work is mainly the responsibility of individual students, although preparatory work is undertaken with staff in Semester B. Teaching and assessment on the programme is in English and students should have good knowledge of this and also of another language, if undertaking project work in a country where English is not the first language.
Both awards have a common structure and philosophy, the separate awards reflecting different options which students take and the likely focus of project work leading to dissertations. Both pathways share core units as follows:
International Social Work (30 credits)
Researching and Learning (30 credits)
Project Work and Dissertation unit (60 credits)
Option units (all carrying 30 credits each) are currently available as follows:
Introduction to forced migration * Migration, citizenship and social policy
Gender, development and social welfare * Cultures of Exile
International Refugee Law
Mental Health in Comparative Perspective
Psycho-social analysis of forced migration
However, approval is being sought for additional units and the availability of all units each year may vary.
All units are assessed, usually by both class/ course work elements and more substantial assignments (but normally not by examination), and successful completion of four taught units and the project/ dissertation unit leads to award of either the MA International Social Work and Community Development Studies Or MA International Social Work and Refugee Studies. Alternatively, students may enrol only for the taught part of the course, and successful completion of two units or four units would lead to award of a post-graduate certificate (60 credits) or diploma (120 credits) respectively, which would bear the title of the chosen pathway.
Enquiries are welcome and application should be made direct to the university or via a SOCRATES partner school if this is more convenient. For more information please visit our website () or contact one of the following people:
