The initiative continues to expand through international dialogue, practical guidance, and a newly released podcast episode.","Body":"<div><div dir='auto'>We are pleased to share the Final Report of the EASSW-funded Regional Event Co-Creating a Practical Guide: Activating the \u201cDecolonising Social Work Practicum\u201d Podcast for Transformative Learning in Social Work, led by Dr Henglien Lisa Chen, Associate Professor in Social Work and Social Care at the University of Sussex, and hosted in collaboration with colleagues at Malm\u00f6 University.<\/div><\/div><div><div dir='auto'> <\/div><div dir='auto'>Held at Malm\u00f6 University on 29 January 2026, the event brought together 47 student colleagues connected with universities in Sweden, Finland, Germany, Switzerland and Austria for a full day of dialogue, reflection and cross-national learning around decolonising social work practice education.<\/div><\/div><div><div dir='auto'>One of the key outcomes was Unmuting Practice (UNMUTE), developed by Dr Chen from the co-created learning emerging from the event. These values were reflected at the 2026 International Trauma Recovery Conference<\/strong>, held on 20 July 2026<\/strong> at St. Luke's International University in Tokyo, Japan<\/strong>, where scholars, practitioners, community organizations, and people with lived experience came together to explore new pathways for trauma recovery.<\/p>The conference represented an important milestone in building stronger partnerships between universities, health professionals, social workers, community organizations, and survivor-led initiatives from Japan and across the world. Rather than focusing solely on research findings, the meeting created opportunities for genuine dialogue between academia and civil society, reinforcing the belief that sustainable trauma recovery requires collaborative, community-based, and culturally responsive approaches.<\/p>Representing the EASSW<\/strong>, the Department of Social Work at Hellenic Mediterranean University<\/strong> and the Social Applied Research and Social Work Lab (SoRSoW)<\/strong>, Dr. Kleio Koutra<\/strong> delivered a presentation highlighting the evolving role of social work in trauma recovery research and practice. Drawing on the work of the international MiStory (Multicultural Study of Trauma Recovery)<\/strong> collaboration, she presented evidence demonstrating how survivor narratives can inform trauma-informed practice, culturally responsive interventions, and social work education across diverse cultural settings.<\/p>Her presentation emphasized that trauma recovery extends far beyond symptom reduction. Recovery is a relational, community, and social process, shaped by supportive relationships, social capital, community participation, and culturally meaningful resources. This perspective aligns closely with the core values of social work and highlights the profession's unique contribution to interdisciplinary trauma-informed care.<\/p>The conference also strengthened collaboration with a wide range of Japanese organizations and community partners, including Saya- Saya,<\/strong> STAND Still With<\/strong>, the Better Future Foundation<\/strong>, and numerous local practitioners and advocates. Their participation illustrated the value of bringing together universities, community organizations, artists, practitioners, and people with lived experience to co-create knowledge and promote recovery-oriented communities.<\/p>The international programme featured contributions from colleagues representing the University of Michigan<\/strong>, Yokohama National University<\/strong>, Temple <\/strong> University<\/strong>, Springfield College<\/strong>, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki<\/strong>, Hellenic Mediterranean University<\/strong>, and many other institutions, reflecting the truly global nature of the MiStory network.<\/p>Beyond the scientific programme, the conference concluded with the MiStory Japan Photo Exhibition<\/strong> and a moving public reading by Noriko Yamada (Yokohama National University)<\/strong>, demonstrating how storytelling, photography, and the arts can foster dialogue, reduce stigma, and amplify survivors' voices.<\/p>For EASSW, this conference serves as an inspiring example of how social work education, international research partnerships, and community engagement<\/strong> can work together to address one of today's most pressing global challenges. The act of war should not be tolerated by any human being, as it causes loss, grief, pain and terror to all involved especially to those who are victims and suffer due to such an invasion. Especially, it should not be accepted from social workers whose aim and goal is to promote social cohesion, social welfare and protect human rights under any circumstances!<\/p>We, as European Association of Schools of Social Work, that adheres to the United Nations\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00e2\u201e\u00a2 Declarations and Conventions on Human Rights, recognizing that respect for the inalienable rights of the individual is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace condemn any act of invasion into people\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00e2\u201e\u00a2s life<\/strong>.
